Hamish Brown
The Bothy

Hamish Brown's varied career as mountain traveller and climber, besides his interests in the rich heritage of Scotland and a fascination with far peoples and places has led to a prolific, wide-ranging output of articles as well as his popular books. Many of his articles have appeared in The Scotsman and the Evening News and from these a selection has been edited by Hamish (typically, while in the Atlas Mountains) under the appropriate title of TRAVEL. Whether on foot or ski, sailing or canoe-ing, looking at prehistoric monuments or chasing birds and flowers or leaping to the defence of Scotland's shrinking wildlands Hamish writes with a contagious enthusiasm, with humour and an eye for beauty. A few topics and places have been omitted as they have appeared more fully in other books but no attempt has been made to alter the freshness or topicality of the pieces. Hamish has simply added a few linking passages and arranged the pieces in a certain chronological and thematic order. This is one man's travels but they will appeal to all who enjoy the rich landscape and traditions of Scotland.

Born in Colombo in 1934 Hamish Brown has roamed the world ever since: living in Sri Lanka and Japan, escaping from Malaysia to South Africa as a war refugee and taking in a dozen Middle East and East African countries during National Service days in the RAF. He has climbed and travelled extensively in the Alps and less-known areas of Europe as well as in the remote Andes or Himalayas and each year spends some months in the south of Morocco. When not busy traveling and writing home is at Kinghorn with view over the Forth to Edinburgh.

For twelve years Hamish introduced youngsters to the Highlands, pioneering what has become 'Outdoor Education' then, after a spell as County Adviser, he set off on the 112-day walk over all the Munros - a landmark event-which is told in the award-winning Hamish's Mountain Walk. This was followed by the longest trip over the English, Irish and Welsh peaks, told in Hamish's Groats End Walk, while the recent Great Walking Adventure tells of travels ranging from the Ultimate Challenge (his invention) to treks in Corsica, Norway, the Andes, Atlas and Himalayas. Hamish has edited two classic anthologies: Poems of the Scottish Hills and the huge Speak to the Hills besides a volume of his own poems Time Gentlemen. He has written a guide to the island of Rhum and published Five Bird Stories besides keeping up a variety of articles in many magazines and newspapers, including The Scotsman, some of which are here collected as TRAVEL.

Bill Currie
A Line on Scottish Fishing

Bill Currie Writing about fishing seems to me to be a very natural part of fishing itself. I fish a lot and am continuously involved in writing about it. One of my platforms is the monthly magazine Trout and Salmon , which I write for regularly, but over the years I have published many articles in other magazines. I have also written a cluster of books, the most recent trio being The River Within (1993), The Guinness Book of Game Fishing (1990) and Days and nights of Gamefishing (1984, 1987). Gary R. Dobson
Reflections on A Dream and Searching for BrigadoonGary Dobson

A great number of years ago, I was an employment consultant for a major agency. One of my lesser responsibilities was to write a lunch schedule for my fellow recruiters. I didn't consider authoring this type of memorandum to be very exciting, so I decided to write a wee story that would accompany the schedule. Every week I would come up with some sort of a whimsical offering designed to bring a smile to those who read it. Eventually, someone else took over the job of writing the lunch schedules and I became a writer of short stories.

I continue to try to bring smiles to those who read my articles and tales. I also, on occasion, cause my readers to shed a tear or two. In this section of the magazine, you'll find the current musings of my mind, imagination and dreams. I hope they will bring you comfort, happiness and inspiration. And by the way, Scotland is the land of my heart and spirit's birth. I wasn't born there, but my soul was, thus most of my columns will contain at least some references to this most majestic and mythical of realms.

Adam Harvey
Soiled Hands

Adam Harvey Adam's day job, which consists mainly of painting/decorating and general farm and building maintenance, doesn't really give him the creative outlet that gardening offers. I think most gardening enthusiasts would agree that after gardening itself, talking about it with others similarly besotted comes a close second, largely because not only does it offer the chance to share experiences, good and bad, but it also facilitates the transfer of useful information. Writing, rather than talking about the subject, has many pitfalls, not least there always exists the danger of inadvertent dissemination of uncorrected factual errors. However, Adam feels it gives him great satisfaction if just a small part of his meager output falls somewhere on fertile soil. He would enjoy hearing from you and can be contacted by email at "Adam Harvey

Frank Hatton
From Over the Pond

Frank Hatton Frank lives in England. After he got out of school Frank entered industry, working on the welding of aircraft components. During WW II he served in the armed services as a motor cycle despatch rider. After the war he returned to the welding business, firstly as an instructor of welding, then moved to the selling of welding equipment as a salesman, and then into sales management. He then became involved in marketing, and spent several years travelling the world lecturing on welding equipment technology and safety. Retired in 1987 at the age of 60 and as he says "Have been lazing around ever since." Which we do not believe if he is writing stories like these. He would enjoy hearing from you and can be contacted by email at Frank Hatton

Woei Hern Chan
Woei Hern Woei Hern

How did a Hebridean magazine end up with a writer in Malsysia? The answer is simple - wonderful poetry. I think the best way to introduce Woei Hern is to share what he submitted to us. "Hi, My name is Woei Hern Chan and I'm a 20-year-old student in Malaysia. I am an urban romantic, manic depressive, with a heart I can't keep off my sleeve, and a pen that bleeds all my heart holds onto paper......I hope you enjoy my pieces"
