Clan societies and tartan producers have a lot to answer for giving, as they do, the impression that your "name" is important. It isn't. If you were able to get back, say, 250 years you would find at least 500 ancestors, so what is special about the one who's given you your surname?

And remember that then, as now, there was a fair amount of fornication and adultery going on, so can you be sure that you are really descended from the men - reputed to be fathers of each generation?
