Scotland has long been famous for soft fruit production but once berries and currants are all picked, it is time for apples to shine. Centuries old native apples are being recognized as part of Scottish heritage. The National Trust for Scotland maintains apple orchards at several castle grounds and many old-fashioned apples of Scotland are available from nurseries like Butterworths' in Ayrshire (http://www.webage.co.uk/apples/). Grafted to dwarfing rootstock, Scottish apple varieties like: Lady of the Lake, Stirling Castle, White Melrose, Lass o' Gowrie, Beauty of Moray, Scotch Bridget, Lady of the Wemyss, Hawthornden, Doctor Hogg, Tam Montgomery or Bloody Ploughman might flourish in just a large pot on your patio!
