While crofts can now be purchased outright, most crofters are tenants. So who does own Scotland? That has long been a question, the subject of books, wonder of many and now a website that aims to identify Scotland's landowners: http://www.whoownsscotland.org.uk. Figures at http://www.firstfoot.com indicate 92% of Sutherland, nearly 1.2 million acres is just 123 properties. Not likely many crofters buying out those large estates! Try these sites for more on crofting: http://www.crofterscommission.org.uk/ and http://www.croftingfoundation.co.uk
