Scotland Puzzle

Witches of Scotland

By Kay Glasgow

Be forewarned. The puzzle turns to a dark time in Scotland, the 15th-18th century. In periods of political, social and religious upheaval, Scotland, much like Germany, France, Switzerland, Denmark, England and Russia took to witch-hunting, trials and executions (mostly of women but men and children too). Older estimates are as high as 17,000 executions for witchcraft, however data from the recent Survey of Scottish Witchcraft (http://www.arts.ed.ac.uk/witches/) has lower figures. A 1590's pamphlet, Newes of Scotland gave "fair and balanced" coverage of witch-crazed Scotland. Fascinating pages are at: http://special.lib.gla.ac.uk/exhibns/month/aug2000.html
