Heather

By Kay Glasgow

The thistle is the flower of Scotland but heather may be welcome in more gardens. The botanical name for Scottish heather or ling is Calluna vulgaris. But there is also heath, Erica, botanically speaking. Calluna and Erica are both known as heathers so are Daboecia and Andromeda. Confused yet? Here's my tip: erica and heath have 5 letters, calluna and heather each has 7. Enjoy the Hielan heather in the anagrams. For a virtual moor, The Heather Society site, http://www.users.zetnet.co.uk/heather/index.html is always abloom.
