Am Fear-Turais The Tourist
Fear-turais à Sasainn
thàinig e staigh dhan bhàr
aon oidhche ann am meadhan an t-samhraidh,
e bruidhinn mu eòin a chunnaic e
air eilean Threisnis - nach robh e mìorbhaileach!
ceithir seòrsa thar fhichead
ach aon nas lugha na 'n-uiridh.

'S ann an Sasain
bhiodh e a' faicinn eòin cuideachd
nuair a gheibheadh e saor o chosnadh bùirdeasach.
'S thuig mi In uair sin
gum bu duine e às an fhicheadamh linn
beagan ceart, beagan ceàrr,
beagan bog, beagan air chall,
gun e tuigsinn na bha tachairt
's ged a thuigeadh, gun e 'na chomas
na h-eòin a bheannachadh ceart.
An English tourist -
he came into the bar
one night in midsummer,
talking of birds he had seen
on the Treshnish islands - wasn't it marvellous!
twenty-four varieties -
but one less than last year.

And in England
he would see birds also
when he was free from his middle-class occupation.
And I understood him then
as someone from the twentieth century
somewhat right, somewhat wrong,
somewhat soft, somewhat lost,
not understanding what was happening,
and, even if he did, not able
to bless the birds aright.
