Da Oran Airson Ceilidh Uir Two Songs For A New Ceilidh
"Thoir Lunnainn ort," thubhairt iad rium.
"Arms a' bhaile mhór ni thu ceòl
i solus goirt cruaidh do chuim."
IS bha mi stri rium fhin bliadhnachan mòr'

a' smaoineachadh air na sràidean ud,
daoine le cumhachd geur 'nan gniiis,
is tagsaidh shoillseach dhealrach
a' lasradh uinneagan mo thùir.

Ach an nochd an so ris an teine
's na cnuic eadar mi fhìn 's an speur
's mi 'g ésdeachd r's an t-sàmhachd fhalamh
's a' faicinn nam fiadh a' tighinn gu m'éigh

tha m' smao'neachadh air fear eile
a thubhairt na facail a tha fìor:
"Seall dìreach s'os troimh choill is choille.
Seall 'na do chridhe fhéin 's sgrìobh."
"Go to London," they said to me.
"In the great city you will make songs
from the sore hard light of your breast."
And I strove with myself for many years

thinking of those streets,
men with sharp power in their gaze,
and illuminated glittering taxis
lighting the windows of my mind.

But tonight sitting by the fire
and the hills between me and the sky
listening to the empty silence
and seeing the deer come to my call

I am thinking of another man
who spoke the words that are true:
"Look directly down through wood and wood.
Look in your own heart and write."
Iain Mac A' Ghobhainn
Iain Crichton Smith
