A' Ghaoth The Wind
Anail chaoin tha siubhal mall
'S nach fhaic mo shuil ri m' bheò,
Cuin a thòisich d' imeachd fann,
'S an ruig thu d' uidh' air chòir?

Bheil cabhag ann am fannan speur
Nach fan ri ordugh rìgh?
Bheil dan an toir air slighe cheum'
Gun tòiseachadh gun chrìch?

Nan innseadh tu gach sealladh faoin
A chunnaic thu Ie d' shùil,
Nan aithriseadh gach facal baoth,
Gach gealladh is sgeul-rùin,

Nach mòr an caoidh, nach buan an cràdh
A mhosgladh ann an crìdh
Gach neach Ie mithich a bhith ghnàth
'Na ionracan 's an sìth!

Ach dh'imich thu Ie athais bhuan
Thar chluaintean gorm' an fheòir,
Is dh'fhalaich thu ad' chridhe suairc
Gach gealladh baoth is bòid.
O gentle breath that slowly blows
Which my eye will never see,
When did your weak motion start,
And will you reach your goal all right?

Is there haste in the breeze aloft
Which awaits no king's command?
Does fate pursue it in its track
With no beginning or end?

If you told every foolish sight
You've observed with your eye,
Repeated every simple word,
Every promise, every secret,

Great were the grief, and lasting the pain,
That would awake in the heart
Of all whose time it is to know
Righteousness in peace!

But off you went in perpetual ease
Over pastures green with growth,
And in your gentle heart concealed
Each idle promise and oath.
James Thomson
