dh'éirich a' mhuir shiabach, Ie grian mhaidne
dearg-bhileach, a' tairgsinn dhomh biadh,
ach shìn i air ais.
dh'éirich a' mhuir chraobhach aig meadhan-latha,
ban-ghruagach, ag ìobairt dhomh gaol,
ach shìn i air ais.
dh'éirich a' mhuir sgianach aig àm duibhre
dubh-shùileach, is sguab i mi, sguab
i, is chaith i air ais.

the lathered sea rose, with morning sun
red-lipped, offered me food,
but then she drew back.
the branching sea rose at noon
flaxen-haired, offered me love,
but she drew back.
the bladed sea rose at dusk
dark-eyed, she swept me up, swept
me, and then tossed me back.
