Dleasnas Nan Airdean The Duty of the Heights
A' bheinn dhorcha fo 'n dilinn,
ris na siontan 'na h-inneoin,
tha sior shéideadh m' a creachann,
tha sior cheathach m' a sliosaibh;
is doirbh fo na casan
a h-aisridhean snidheach;
is seasgar m' a bonnaibh
taighean, gortan, is liosan.

Dheònaich beagan an sirach
tric los cach a bhith blasad
air an t-sonas chaidh bhuinnig
ri uchd Chumhachdan 's gaillinn ---
sgal na gaoith' air a' mhullach,
deò cha chluinnear 's na srathaibh:
is e tuairgneadh nan àrdean
a bheir samhchar do'n ghleannan.

A òigridh mo dh ù ithcha,
an e cifàne nan ròidhlean,
fois is clos nan gleann iosal,
air an dion o 'n gharbh shéideadh?
Biodh bhur ceum air a' mhullach,
is bhur n-uchd ris na speuran.
Dhuibh srac-ghaoth nam bidean
mu'n tig sgrios 'na bheum-sléibh oirnn.

The dark mountain under the downpour,
exposed as an anvil to the tempest,
the wind ever blows about its summit,
the mist ever drifts about its sides;
difficult under the feet
are its dripping paths through the rocks;
tranquil about its base
are houses, corn-plots, and gardens.

Often a few have assented to trials
so that others should taste
the happiness that was won
in the face of Powers and tempest
the scream of the wind on the crest;
not a breath is heard on the straths:
it's the buffeting of the heights
that gives tranquility to the little glen.

Youth of my country,
is it to be the tranquility of the plains, then,
the peace and slumber of the low valleys,
sheltered from the rough blast?
Let your step be on the summit,
and your breast exposed to the sky.
For you the tearing wind of the pinnacles,
lest destruction come on us as a landslide.
