Dubh is Geal Black and White
Bha luachair ceann Loch Bhat an Dìb
Faoin ghluasad anns a' ghaoith;
Gun dhearc mi maighdeann 'g imeachd ann
'S an là air theich* roirnhn oidhch'.

Air uisge balbh na linne dhuirch
Bha lili-bhà;ite bhàn;
Aig fois ri oir bha 'mhaighdeann sheang,
Dorch fhalt an glas an là.

O, s fhada s fhada learn an oidhch'
'S an cadal dhomh dol clì,
A faicinn loinn na maighdinn sheang
Faoin ghluasad anns a' ghaoith':

A faicinn 'na mo shùilean dùint'
Bòidhchead gil' a bràgh'd
Air uisge balbh na linne dhuirch
Mar lili-bhàite bhàn.

Tormond MacLeoid
The rushes at Loch Bhat an Dib
Moved gently in the breeze;
I saw a maiden walking there
As the day escaped the night.

On dumb water of dark pool
A white lily grew;
At rest by its edge was the slender girl,
Dark hair in the dawning day.

O, long, long I found the night
With sleep evading me,
As I saw the shape of the slender girl
Move gently in the breeze:

Seeing in my eyes though closed
The fair brightness of her bosom
On dumb water of dark pool
Like a white lily growing.
