A Nighean Og
|
Young Girl |
A nighean òg a dh'fhalbhas
le druim direach air an t-sràid
tha bascaidean dhìtheanan 'nam bhroilleach
tha mo bhòrd deasaicht' le do ghàir.
|
Young girl that walks
with straight back along the street,
there are baskets of flower in my breast,
my table is furnished with laughter.
|
|
Canaidh té rium, "tha próis 'na coiseachd":
ach freagraidh mise mar as cóir,
"Eil pròis anns a'ghréin san adhar?
Eil farmad eadar a' chlach 's an t-òr?"
|
A woman will say to me, "There is pride in her walk",
but I will answer properly,
"Is there pride in the sun in the sky?
Is there jealousy between stone and gold?"
|
|
Is nauair a ghabhas stoirm seachad
'na shaoghal fhéin le uisg is gaoith
an can thu "Pròis is àrdan" ris
a chuireas coilltean bun-os-cionn?
|
And when a storm goes past
in its own world of wind and rain
will you "Pride and arrogance!" to it
that turns forsts upside down?
|
|
An càin thu daoimean airson lasair
no 'n cuan airson a lainnir chiùin?
Tha soitheach gheal am measg nam bàta
's am measg nan adan dubh, tha crùin.
|
Will you disparage the diamond for its glitter
or the sea for its radiance?
There is a white vessel amongh the ships,
among the black hats there is a crown
