Chab e nacg dèanainn dàin dhuit'
nach cuirinn cainnt ann an ̣rdugh:
chan e nach dleas do bheusan
fileantas labhrach,
nach aithnich mi annad ḅidhchead
is doimhne bàighe;
chan e gun dh'fhiosraich mi 'n geamhradh
a chuireas 'na mo thosd mi
-ged a chaidh a ghuin 'na m' èideadh
's a dh'fhàg an eighealaich gort mi -
cumaidh tu blàth mi
ged nach tuig thu mo leisgeul:
gun dh'fhiosraich mi Cèitean
s' an cẹl fosgailt
's uiseag anns na speuran.

It is not that I would not make poems for you,
that I would not set words in order;
and it is not that your virtues do not deserve
eloquent poetry
that I do not recognise beauty in you
and depth of affection;
it is not my experience of winter
that keeps me silent
- though its sting pierced my clothes
and its numbing has left me pained-
you keep me warm
thought you do not understand my plea:
that I have known a May-time
with music unbounded
and a lark singing in the heavens
