Un Uair a Labhras Mi Mu Aodann
|
When I Speak of The Face
|
|
An uair a labhras mi mu aodann
agus mu spiorad geal mo ghaoil ghil
's ann a theireach neach nach d'ràinig
mo shùilean dalla air a' chàthar,
air a' bhoglaich oillteil ghrànda
s' am bheil gach dòchas 'ga bhàthadh;
ach chunnaic mi bho àird a' Chuilithinn
gathadh glòir is breòiteachd duilghe;
chunnaic mi òradh lainnir grèine
agus boglach dhubh na bréine;
's eòl dhomh seirbheadchd gheur an spioraid
nas's fheàrr na aoibhneas luath a' cridhe.

When I speak of the face
and of the pure spirit of my pure love,
one might say that my blind eyes
had not lighted on the morass
or on the ugly and frightful marsh
where every hope is being drowned;
but I have seen from the height of the Cuillin
darting glory and the weakness of sorrow;
I have seen the gilding light of the sun
and the black rotting fen;
I know the sharp bitterness of spirit
better than the swift joy of heart.
