The Flannan Lighthouse is located on the Flannan Islands twenty one miles west of the Isle of Lewis. It is named after St Flannan who was St Ronan's half brother and the islands are sometimes called the Seven Hunters. The lighthouse was built in 1899 and stands on the top of a 200 foot cliff. The light was automated in 1971. It is famous because three keepers disappeared on December 13, 1900 and were never heard of again. The official Northern Lighthouse Board position is large body of water washed them out to sea. But, no one knows the true story.

Our beautiful picture is by Charles Tait .

An exciting book about 31 of the best scottish lighthouses explained in insightful text and magnificent colour photographs is available here.
