One of the most difficult of the mainland Scottish Lighthouses to reach Cape Wrath lies at mainland Scotland's most northwesterly point. To visit once you get to Durness, you ride a ferry across the Loch of Durness to meet a minivan which will take you out to the lighthouse. Built in 1828 the engineer was Robert Stevenson. The beacon which flashes four white every 30 second has a range of 24 mile. The station was automated in 1998 and the keepers removed.

An exciting book about 31 of the best scottish lighthouses explained in insightful text and magnificent colour photographs is available here.
