Known as the windiest place in the United Kingdom the Butt of Lewis Lighthouse sits on the far northern tip of the Isle of Lewis where its nearest neighbors could be "The North Pole." The lighthouse station was lit in 1862 and designed by David and Thomas Stevenson. The beautiful red brick tower stands 37 metres high and flashes white every 5 seconds. The beacon reaches out 25 miles into the Atlantic. The station was automated in 1998. The Butt has taken on an important new role of monitoring and assisting in the establishment of four new lighthouses built by the Northern Lighthouse Board to guide ships to the new oil fields west of Lewis.
