Tarbat Ness Lighthouse is located on the east coast of Scotland at the end of a beautiful farming peninsula. It was built in 1830 and the engineer was Robert Stevenson. The station was built as direct result of 16 ships being lost in a Moray Firth storm in November of 1826. The building of the light cost £19, 656 which was very expensive for the time. It was automated in 1985. The white tower with red bands stands 41 metres high and has a range of 24 miles. The light flashes 4 white every 30 seconds. An earthquake once shook the light so hard the shades and lamp glasses shook but still she stood. A good paved road wanders through fields filled with barley and cows making it one of the most accessible Scottish lights.

The picture comes from Scotland in Focus.

An exciting book about 31 of the best scottish lighthouses explained in insightful text and magnificent colour photographs is available here.
