Chicken Rock Lighthouse is located off of the southwest corner of the Isle of Man. You may be wondering why we would have a Manx lighthouse in this column. The answer is the Northern Lighthouse Board which is the Scottish branch of UK lighthouse organization operates the Isle of Man stations - so it is a Scottish lighthouse. It was built in 1875 by David and Thomas Stevenson. It had a range of 13 miles and the beautiful tower stands 44 metres high. The light was discontinued from active service in 1961.
The picture comes from the Northern Lighthouse Board's 1996 calendar and was taken by R. McIntosh.
An exciting book about 31 of the best scottish lighthouses explained in insightful text and magnificent colour photographs is available here.
