The Isle of May lighthouse was established in 1816 and is located at the entrance of the Firth of Forth on the east coast of Scotland. It was one of a pair of leading lights so ships could avoid the North Carr rocks off of the Fife coast. The square tower looks like castle in design and soars 24 metres into the air which gives the beacon a nominal range of 26 miles. The engineer was Robert Stevenson.

An exciting book about 31 of the best scottish lighthouses explained in insightful text and magnificent colour photographs is available here.
