When the Scottish lighthouses were first built they all had a sundial which was used for timing the light. As the lighthouses were automated the brass heads were taken off the sundials and all that remained were the columns. Our lighthouse, Eshaness, is one of the few that still has a working sundial. In this picture the sun is just rising on a cold winter morning but when it does the sundial will read accurate time. You can find more articles in the archive under Lighthouse Beacons From Scotland.
