Fethaland Lighthouse was built in 1979 to act as a navigational guide to ships going in and out of Sullom Voe oil terminal in the Shetland Islands. Isle of Fethaland (the fertile land) is the most northerly tip of the Shetland Mainland. The area was once one of the biggest fishing haaf in Shetland. The Point of Fethaland was the first new lighthouse to be built on Shetland in 50 years. It was brought online in 1977. Its night character is a group flashing of 6.4 seconds in red and white every 15 seconds. The nominal range of the red is 20 nautical miles and the white 24 nautical miles. It was lit in 1977. It was built totally automatic and never had a keeper. David A Stevenson was the engineer for the station. The lighthouse is small but a trip to the area is worth anyone's while since it is so beautiful.
