From Eshaness Lighthouse by Sharma Krauskopf

Up Helly Aa

In Shetland the last week of January an event unique to the entire world occurs. It is called Up Helly A' or as most know it Up Helly Aa. Being at the lighthouse in Shetland for the last two Januarys I have attended this event.

The history of how this out of the ordinary celebration has evolved can be found here. The one phrase I would use to describe it is a grand example of things past. The beautiful Viking long ship and the costumes of the Jarl's squad make you think the fierce raiders from Scandinavia are still around.

When it comes to the costumes of the other 800 plus people involved history sometimes gets left behind a bit. This year their were 45 squads and their costumes included among others Moulin Rouge, Lord of the Rings, A Knight's Tale, Jumpin Cat Flash, 50 Years of the Pill, Chim Chiminey, Pink Feather Club, Flower Pot Men, One man and his ----Ostrich, and Devil's Gate (movie currently being filmed in Shetland).

The burning of the ship that is the highlight of the event is dramatic. Beginning with the eerie orange red light created by over 800 torches marching through the dark street it builds momentum until the torches are thrown on waiting long ship. The picture on our page Up Helly As 2001 will gives you an idea of what it is like.

My reaction is probably different from most people attending. I felt a deep sadness and despair as I watched the charming little ship burn. I could tell when I saw it that great care and hard work had gone into its construction. Then to see its grace and charm destroyed so quickly bothered me.

As always,

Sharma
