From Eshaness Lighthouse by Sharma Krauskopf

Christmas at Eshaness

This will be my first winter holiday spent at Eshaness lighthouse. I am spending an entire year at Eshaness to complete a BBC documentary feature and my upcoming book "A Year at the Lighthouse." I am so excited. For years I have dreamed about Christmas/New Year in Scotland. Well, it is no longer a dream but reality. I will fly back to the States to spend part of the holiday with my family.

Ringing in the New Year sitting by the Royal Red Rayburn (appropriate for this season) with my small Christmas tree, and lots of Christmas music. All of this is accompanied by the sound of the wind, surf and seabirds. Wow! What a great way to spend the holiday.

One of my favorite Christmas songs is by my friend, Moira Kerr. Her modern carol entitled This Child (You can find the album with this song here.) is absolutely beautiful with a wonderful tempo. I have put the words and the music in this letter so you could listen to it with the surf in the background just like I will be doing. The difference between you and me is modern technology makes it possible for you to turn the surf off if you want. It also makes it possible for me to send you my best wishes with a Christmas card which expands into a even bigger wish. Now if it were just possible for you to send me a card at the lighthouse it would really be perfect.

This Child
By Moira Kerr

Three wise men came from countries a far.
The sky was full of light
They saw a brightly shining star
High above Bethlehem, high above Bethlehem that night.

It brought them to a stable bare.
And through the dimness of the light
They saw a baby lying there.
They bowed their heads in prayer
They bowed their heads in prayer
That night.

And they brought myrrh, frankincense, and gold
It is the greatest story ever told.
They laid such riches by him there
In his little stable so cold, so humble and so bare.

And these men the highborn of their land
Who see such great and wondrous things?
This child all wrapped in swaddling bands
One day he would be, one day he would be,
King of kings.

And they brought myrrh, frankincense, and gold
It is the greatest story ever told.
They laid such riches by him there
In his little stable so cold, so humble and so bare.

And they brought myrrh, frankincense, and gold
It is the greatest story ever told.
They laid such riches by him there
In his little stable so cold, so humble and so bare.

You can find more articles in the archive under Island Miniatures/Lighthouse Letters.

I have two books which are directly related to this column. The Last Lighthouse tells how we bought our lighthouse and in Scottish Lighthouses our lighthouse is featured in the 31 lighthouses presented. You can order autographed copies by clicking on the name of the book.

Other books you might be interested in ordering and having me sign are my book for children, Moonbeam Cow, Irish Lighthouses , and "Scotland - The Complete Guide and Road Atlas", a beautiful book for which I did the text.
