Land of Mountain and Mist This month's guest writer is some one regular Radiance reader's know - the singer Moira Kerr and a close friend of hers - Hamish MacInnes. Together they have created a wonderful book. We feel this book is so special we are presenting them as guest writers instead of just reviewing the book. The Land of Mountain and Mist photos by Hamish and verse by Moira is a collection which depicts the subtle beauty of the Scottish Highlands. Hamish MacInnes has an enthusiasm for his native land which is reflected in his subject matter. His work as a writer, mountaineer and film maker has given him a unique knowledge of this land of mountain and mist.

The book is predominantly of the West Coast, which is considered one of the most scenic parts of Europe. It is a place of constant change, rugged headlands, windswept moors, balmy glens and castles steeped in history. It is a place to visit and a land in which to linger.

Each photograph is complemented by a verse by Moira Kerr, a song writer whose words and music reveal an equal respect for the Highlands of Scotland. The blend of photograph and verse provides a new and refreshing insight to this mystical land.

HAMISH MACINNES: Is recognized internationally as an authority on mountain rescue and is the Leader of the Glencoe Mountain Rescue Team. He has written eighteen books on mountain rescue related subjects, travel, adventure as well as fiction, several of his books have been translated into foreign languages.

From his home in Glencoe he has travelled widely; from expeditions to the Himalaya to the Amazon jungle and is an expert on safety on major feature movies such as The Eiger Sanction, Five Days One Summer, The Mission and James Bond films. He also has his own film company and has been a principal consultant and producer on BBC Live TV broadcasts on climbing including The Old Man of Hoy, the Matterhorn Centenary Climb, etc. His interest in photography spans some forty years and he has illustrated all his own guidebooks. He is the Founder of the Search and Rescue Dog Association, Honorary Director of the Leishman Research Laboratory and was awarded the OBE and BEM for his services to rescue and sport. He is also an Honorary Doctor of Laws, University of Glasgow and Honorary Doctor of Science, University of Aberdeen.

MOIRA KERR: Moira's early achievements were in field athletics. Her first year brought her Scottish and British titles in the shot putt at the age of fourteen under the expert supervision of coach, John Anderson. She held the Scottish title until a back injury forced her to retire in her late teens.

As she had been singing since the age of three, progression into the entertainment business was natural, and winning a talent contest saw her career really established. Her many songs, for which she also composes the music, are mainly of Scotland and the Highlands and these show a rare insight and love of her homeland. The five albums which she has done have a wide appeal to all groups, and her poetry, a new venture, has a poignancy and wit which is both refreshing and subtle.

Lets take a look at just one page in the book on the Island of Eigg and the Sgurr.

AN ENCHANTED ISLAND
I SAW THEM TOGETHER, THROUGH THE TREES,
THE SUN SMILED ON THEIR SMILES,
THEIR GAZES LONG AND MEANINGFUL.
THEY WALKED ON, AS THOUGH
THE ONLY PEOPLE ON AN ENCHANTED ISLAND.
AT CLOSER RANGE, I SAW HIS FACE
AND THE SUN DISAPPEARED BEHIND A CLOUD.
