THE RESCUE
By Judy Calheiros
Her father roared with anger loud
When his daughter asked to marry--
Love for a man from a family shunned
Filled this daughter of Castlecary
Imprisoned in the darkest room
Of the castle's only tower
Lizzie dreamed of her fair love
And waited for the hour
The night was cold, as was her heart
Lights flickered on the wall
Lizzie imprisoned in her room
Listened carefully for the call
In the distance her lover rode
Determined to free his bride
From the bounds of a tyrant father
And have her by his side
With clansmen Duncan rode that night
Up to the castle keep
Spreading his tartan long and wide
He implored his love to leap
While her father slept that night
Quietly in his bed
From the turret, Sweet Lizzie jumped
To a plaid of blue and red.
And as her father slumbered on
Until the break of day
With her own true Scottish love
Lizzie ran away.

A Scottish Villanelle
by Diane M. Davis
Far beyond the castle wall,
somewhere deep within the night-
hear the ghosts of Scotland call.
Echoes from an ancient hall
refuse to bow 'fore England's might,
far beyond the castle wall.
Freedom fighters, one and all,
took up arms to join the fight.
Hear the ghosts of Scotland call.
Wallace marched them 'cross the mall
to free the Scotsmen from their plight.
Far beyond the castle wall.
And though the hero came to fall,
The Bruce continued with the fight.
Hear the ghosts of Scotland call.
Let freedom warm you, like a shawl
and Wallace always be your light,
far beyond the castle wall.
Deep among the shadows tall,
far beyond the castle wall-
hear the ghosts of Scotland call.
