Supper

by Sharma Krauksopf

I wish I could tell you where this custom originated but I have never been able to find out. To much of the world the term 'supper' means an evening meal. In some of areas of Scotland it means a cup of coffee or tea with biscuits just before you go to bed. When they first asked me if I wanted supper being the dumb American I said, "I have already had mine, thank you." My good friends laughed and explained the Scottish custom of serving beverages and cookies before you retire for the night.

One of my concerns was if I had tea or coffee just before bed the caffeine would keep me awake. For some reason that has never been a problem. I am able to drop off to sleep right away after supper. I must admit if I skipped the cookies I might be better off. But, when in Scotland you should do as the Scots so I always partake of all of the supper when it is offered. If you visit me at the lighthouse you can be sure I will be serving supper just before we all go to bed.

If anyone knows where the custom comes from please write me at the email link at the bottom so I can thank the right area of Scotland for a great custom.
