The Twelve Days of Yule

A game which was part of the New Year celebration was ‘The Twelve Days of Yule.' Sitting in a semi-circle each person in turn speaks a rhyme and if they make a mistake they are out of the game. If you would like to play here is the rhyme which is similar to the ‘Twelve Days of Christmas' but shows it long tradition by the animals used.

The king sent his lady on the firstYule day,
a papingo-aye;
Wha learns my carol carries it away.

The king sent his lady on the secondYule day,
Three partriks, a papingo-aye;
Wha learns my carol and carries it away.

The king sent his lady on the thirdYule day,
Three plovers, three partriks, a papingo-aye;
Wha learns my carol and carries it away.

The king sent his lady on the fourthYule day,
A goose that was gray,
Three plovers, three partriks, a papingo-aye;
Wha learns my carol and carries it away.

The king sent his lady on the fourth Yule day,
Three starlings, a goose that was gray,
Three plovers, three partriks, a papingo-aye;
Wha learns my carol and carries it away.

The king sent his lady on the sixth Yule day,
Three goldspinks, three starlings, a goose that was gray,
Three plovers, three partriks, a papingo-aye;
Wha learns my carol and carries it away.

The king sent his lady on the seventhYule day,
A bull that was brown, three goldspinks,
Three starlings, a goose that was gray,
Three plovers, three partriks, a papingo-aye;
Wha learns my carol and carries it away.

The king sent his lady on the eighth Yule day,
Three ducks a merry laying, a bull that was brown,
Three goldspinks, three starlings, a goose that was gray,
Three plovers, three partriks, a papingo-aye;
Wha learns my carol and carries it away.

The king sent his lady on the ninth Yule day,
Three swans a merry swimming,
Three ducks a merry laying, a bull that was brown,
Three goldspinks, three starlings, a goose that was gray,
Three plovers, three partriks, a papingo-aye;

The king sent his lady on the tenthYule day,
An Arabian baboon, three swans a merry swimming,
Three ducks a merry laying, a bull that was brown,
Three goldspinks, three starlings, a goose that was gray,
Three plovers, three partriks, a papingo-aye;

The king sent his lady on the eleventhYule day,
Three hinds a swimming, an Arabian baboon,
Three swans a merry swimming,
Three ducks a merry laying, a bull that was brown,

Three stalks o'merry corn, three maids a merry dancing, three hinds a swimming,
An Arabian baboon, three swans a merry swimming,
Three ducks a merry laying, a bull that was brown,

Three plovers, three partriks, a papingo-aye;
