Valentine Day

February 14th is celebrated in Scotland as Valentines Day. Scotland had some of its own customs on this day of celebrating love. At one time children went door to door and begged for sweets and treats similiar to trick or treating without the costumes. Name papers were used to help find a sweetheart. These were small pieces of paper that had printed on them the name of a boy or girl. The papers were placed in a hat and each person drew one and read it. Then the paper was returned to the hat. If a lucky person drew the same name three times it meant they had found their potential spouse and would soon be wed. The name papers were also taken to the home of a chosen mate and handed to her. This was a way of proposing. The chosen mate would give an apple in exchange for the name paper. Gloves were also give on Valentine's Day.
