BOOKS ABOUT WILLIAM WALLACE

William Wallace - Braveheart
by James Mackay

Sir William Wallace of Ellerslie is one of history's greatest heroes, but also one its greatest enigmas - a shadowy figure whose edges have been blurred by myth and legend. Even the date and place of his birth have been misstated - until now. James Mackay uses all his skills as a historical detective to produce this definitive biography, telling the incredible story of a man who, without wealth or noble birth, rose to become Guardian of Scotland. William Wallace, with superb generalship and tactical genius, led a country with no previous warlike traditions to triumph gloriously over the much larger, better-armed and better trained English forces. Seven hundred years later, the heroism and betrayal, the valiant deeds and the dark atrocities, and the struggle of a small nation against a brutal and powerful empire, still create a compelling tale.

Wallace
Biography by Peter Reese

The first section of this major new biography deals with history of Wallace and his time. Wallace courage and heroism during Scotland's darkest days were instrumental in creating a sense of national identity. The brutality of his end is a testament to the fear and humiliation his name inspired in Edward I.

The second section of the book studies the impact of the man and the myth on later generations. The guerilla tactics initiated by Wallace where later used by Robert the Bruce to great success. Blind Harry's epic poem (1478) personifies the will and desire of Scottish people for independence in the figure of Wallace. Over 200 years after his death Scotland's greatest knight continues to inspire nationalists in this country and throughout the world.
