SCOTTISH BOOKS FOR A RAINY DAY

By John Burnett
| This book begins with 'sevin ill years' of 1690s, when a sixth of the population starved. It covers the progress of medical education and science, including famous pioneers such as Joseph Lister (antiseptic surgery) and James Y Simpson (chloroform anaesthesia). The relentlessness of progress is balanced by an account of traditional practices such as visiting healing wells and the independent Gaelic medical tradition. Other topics include epidemics, diet and surgical cutlery. The book concludes with the latest developments in medical technology such as magnetic resonance imaging, and the present -day health of the Scots. John Burnett is curator of the History of Medicine at the National Museum of Scotland.
