SCOTTISH BOOKS FOR A RAINY DAY

Harry Potter and The Sorcerer’s Stone

By J.K. Rowling

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

It has been a long time since any book from Scotland has become an international phenomenon so quickly.  J.K. Rowling wrote this book, the first of a series, when she was 30 years old and desperately struggling to support herself and her daughter.  Since then the book has been one of the best sellers in many countries.  Most think it is a children’s story but during a recent interview Ms. Rowing said the book was not written specifically for children but for anyone who loves a good fairy-tale.

The story begins when Harry Potter who comes to live with his aunt and uncle when his parents are killed.  They are cruel to him and make him live in a closet under the stairs.  When Harry is invited to attend Hogwart’s School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, his life is radically changed.  Harry finds close friends and happiness at this strange school.  The characters in this book are delightful especially Hagrid, Ron and Hermione.   The mystery of Harry’s background and his special traits combined with aiding the three headed dog protect a special treasure makes the book fast paced and exciting.

I loved this book and gave it four thistles.  Just a short aside, I hope the movement to have it banned because it deals with witchcraft is not successful.  I agree with Ms Rowling when she says if you think it is bad influences on your child don’t let them read it.
