SCOTTISH BOOKS FOR A RAINY DAY

Nothing but Heather

By Gerry Cambridge

"Nothing but Heather!" is a delightful book of poems and photographs by Gerry Cambridge, one of Scotland's most distinctive contemporary poets. He consist of forty eight poems matched with pictures. The subjects range from insects to life of the sea to beautiful flowers. My favorites were the frog close up and personal and the snowdrops. The poem that goes with the frog will give you an idea of the written material

Head of Common Frog

He's tasty and he knows it,
you would think, by how he looks ---
distinctly nervous,
each eye
placed as high
as a sentry
on the small hill of his head --
to scan on every side
for foxes, badges, owls, the snide
stateliness
of the assassin
Heron.

The kiss of the sweetest princess
means less
than spider and flies to him.

Heroic
in unimpressiveness
steadfast,
stoic.
he will try
nonetheless
to escape till the end,

the small green sisyphus
whose stone
is life.
