SCOTTISH BOOKS FOR A RAINY DAY

|
In the 1960s Stella Shepherd accompanied her husband to the small island of Papa Stour off the main island of the Shetland group to take the joint posts of missionary and teacher. The couple spent eight years there and she tells the story of their struggles and the neighbors and friends that they came to know and love. One of the most fascinating parts of her story is how "modern" technology came to the island to change the islander's life forever. There was high hope that this new technology would keep people from leaving the island. Alas, this did not happen and the school was closed and the Shepherds had to leave the island. Today there are only 23 people living on Papa Stour. One of the strengths of this book is the insight it gives into the way things were done in the olden days on the Shetland Islands (as well as many of Scotland's islands). Because of the islands accessibility problems the residents continued to use the old ways of securing their food and surviving. It is like stepping back in time to experience in a real setting the struggles of living on the Shetland Islands many decades ago. I gave this book a 4 thistle rating for showing the reader what it was really like to live on a isolated small islands in the far north of Scotland. |
