Laird of the Wind

Susan King leads us on the trail of what happened after William Wallace died. Her newest novel "Laird of the Wind" begins just before William Wallace's death and takes us forward. The main character James Lindsay was created but easily could have existed. James Lindsay blames himself for William Wallace's death even though he tried to save him on the day he was captured. He feels that a prophetess, Isobel of Aberlady, who foretold his betrayal of Wallace was partially responsible for his problems. Setting out to capture her to trade in ransom for his cousin; he arrives to find her castle under siege and her people starving. He rescues her, giving them the opportunity to know each other. A mutual respect and love develops which complicates what must be done to save her father and his cousin. The characters are well developed, the plot believable, and the romance part of the novel well controlled.

An extra asset of this book is insight into hawking and how the birds are trained. A prominent character, is Gawain, the goshawk. The bird was found caught in a tree with an injured wing and tail feathers. James, an experienced falconer, treats the bird's injuries before he attempts to train him so he can be set free. The bird's training I found fascinating since it was something I knew nothing about. Gawain's presence holds the book together and assists the relationship of the two main characters to develop. I found Gawain and his training a special part of this book. The author does a skillful job of showing his stubborn high-strung nature.

This book is awarded four thistles for taking us beyond the death of William Wallace in such an enjoyable fashion.
