It broke my hear when the Rhanna series went out of print. (See book review of one of the series here.) Christine Marion Fraser has the ability to make the small villages of Scotland come alive. It was a real joy when I saw her name on a book entitled "Kinvara" and the cover had a lighthouse on it. You would have thought I had found a gold mine. In many ways I had.
Kinvara is the first in the series of a new saga about Robbie Sutherland who is a lighthouse keeper at Kinvara Lighthouse. Robbie's wife Hannah hates living in their small village. The situation was made even worse when she gave birth to their son who has cerebral palsy. Before Robbie met Hannah he was in love with Morna Jean Sommero. They had a falling out and she went home to Shetland. What Robbie did not know at the time was she went home to give birth to their daughter.
Morna returns to Kinvara prepared to live with her disgrace. As Robbie's marriage becomes more unhappy, he turns to Morna for the love and affection which does not exist at home. The love story of Morna and Robbie is warm and yet tragic because it must always be hidden.
Like all of Christine Marion Fraser's books what makes the story great is the delightful Scottish village of Kinvara she has created and the interesting characters that live there. A line from the back of the book tells it all.
Christine Marion Fraser has created a vivid new Scottish village and peopled it with memorable characters. The spirited and engaging folk of Kinvara, whose fates are shaped by the hard landscape and the rugged coast on which they live, will move, entrance and linger in your memory. This may be book promotion but in this case it 100% true.
