SCOTTISH BOOKS FOR A RAINY DAY

James II

by Christine McGladdery

James II This is the second volume of the series of studies of the Stewart Dynasty in Scotland, 1371 - 1603.

It is the first scholarly biography of James II, the ruler who more than any other Stewart monarch succeeded in overcoming illluck, early adversity, and major political crisis, to emerge as undisputed master of his kingdom in the last years of his short life. Much of the interest of the reign lies in the power struggle between the king and the Black Douglases, the greatest of all late medieval Scottish magnate families. The strengths and weaknesses of the Douglases are examined at length together with James II's ultimately successful efforts to destroy the power bases and leaders of the family. The study is based on contemporary and official sources, and consideration is also given to later, highly coloured views of James II which have influenced popular estimates of the king down to the present day.

Christine McGladdery is Tutor in Scottish History in the University of St. Andrews.
