SCOTTISH BOOKS FOR A RAINY DAY

William MacGillivray

A Hebridean Naturalist's Journal
1817-1818
Reviewed by Sharma Krauskopf and rated

This book that is presented in journal form details life in 19th century Scotland particularly the Western Isles of the Hebrides. William MacGillivray records everything from the weather, the people he meets, the food he eats, the clothes he wears and what he did for entertainment. Particularly good are his descriptions of the birds and plants of the area.

I gave this book a resounding four thistles because having lived on a remote Scottish island it was refreshing to find someone who wrote with such accuracy and detail.
