An absolute delightful surprise this book of sixty essays in seafood philosophy by Charlie Simpson is hard to put down. The essays were written for the Shetland Fishing News over a period of five years. Presented in a light hearted but detailed manner the author tells stories of his own life and cooking endeavours interspersed with many historic notes about living on Shetland.
The biggest surprise were all of the recipes, which are hidden in among the text. If I faulted this book at all I think the recipes should have been blocked out so the reader could find them easily. There is a Recipe Index at the back of the book, which might have been better placed at the beginning.
Seafood is the main theme of the book but it has Shetland recipes for many other foods as well. Since reading the book I have tried many of the recipes and have found them delicious.
I really liked this book and give it a resounding four thistles.
