Scottish Clans and Family Names by Roddy Martine is the most complete book I have ever seen on the surnames connected with Scotland. Each entry in the book covers the history, area of family lands, castles, tartans (ancient and modern) associated with the powerful clans of the Highlands and the great families of the Lowlands. The authors extensive introduction adds historical perspective. There are 240 tartan patterns and over 70 photographs of clan and family lands and their castles in full color. The book also has pictures and highlights of famous clan personalities. In addition to all this there is an authoritative Foreword by Sir Malcolm Innes of Edingight CVO, Lord Lyon King of Arms.![]() | Another feature which helps make this book such a good resource are the six pages of maps indicating location of spheres of influence of families, about the turn of the 18th century were compiled by Sir Iain Moncreiffe of that Ilk and supplemented by an extensive cross index of sept names. My favorite section was the matriculated standards of the clan chiefs. |
| This new 1996 edition is not anything like those superficial books found in the tourist shops. This is a detailed authoritative work with wonderful pictures. | ![]() |
