The Return of King Arthur
By Stephen R. Lawhead

Avalon Science Fiction books have not always been a big interest of mine but my husband had chosen this book to read. I decided to just skim it and ended up not being able to put it down. What I expected was a far-fetched supernatural story of a King Arthur returning to modern times. Instead an exciting The book is a well done story of a young man, Captain James Arthur Stuart, born in the Highlands of Scotland who finds out he is the heir to the throne of England after the suicide of what was to be the country's last king. A new political party led by Thomas Waring has set in place a political machine to do away with the British monarch by the year 2100.

This book is to a great extent a book about Scotland. Many of the characters are Scottish. The descriptions of the Highlands and its people are accurate and well done.

Never once does the new King James desert his Scottish roots. He makes his palace an estate in the Highland, is constantly appearing in his kilt, and throws an old fashion Hogmanay party.

Some reviews that I have seen were unhappy with the book because it was not more about Arthur, the legend, and his people. That is a natural disappointment if you have read some of Stephen R. Lawhead's other books. If you are a Lawhead fan than you might be disappointed.

If you are a Scotland fan you will love this book. This book has a well-developed plot and keep you turning the pages to see whether the monarchy or political forces are going to win. A Scottish hero descended from King Arthur who is bigger than life. The coronation of King James in Edinburgh Castle on the Stone of Destiny is one of those goose bumpy moments for all of us who are close to Scotland.

My ranking is a big four thistles because it so great to see a Scot placed in such a dynamic leadership in a modern day United Kingdom and for the suspense the book offered.
