Hamish MacBeth is now one of the most popular police constables in the United Kingdom since the BBC did a series on M.C. Beaton's laid back policeman. In this book Hamish is perplexed by a murder which everyone seems to believe is a simple drug overdose. But, something just does not seem right about the drug overdose theory so Hamish in his usual style bypasses the system and begins to investigate. His investigation takes him strange places including a extremely different church whose main focus is sex. He also finds himself immersed in the the world of the drug lords. The main plot gets a little lost as he takes on the assignment of trying to find the source of drug shipments coming into his area. The most important part of that assignment is he falls in love with his partner, Oliva Chater, a detective from Glasgow. Hamish feels he has found love and a companion for life so he buys an engagement ring.

This story is a typical Hamish MacBeth mystery with beautiful scenes of the Highlands, the delightful activities of Lochdubh residents, Hamish's laid back lifestyle, Hamish search for love, and a murder to solve as well. Since I like Hamish MacBeth stories I liked this one even though the story got off track in a couple of places.
